Easy 25-Minute Cavatappi Pesto Pasta with Broccoli and Lemon

This pasta pesto cavatappi recipe is one of those dinners that feels special without asking you to spend the whole evening in the kitchen.

The cavatappi holds onto the pesto beautifully, while tender broccoli, fresh lemon and Parmesan add color, flavor and a little balance to the rich basil sauce. I like making this when I want a quick pasta dinner that still feels homemade. Cavatappi is especially good for pesto because its twisted shape gives the sauce plenty of places to cling.

Authenticity & Brand Note

You might recognize this flavor profile! The idea of pairing corkscrew pasta with pesto shows up in official pasta recipes from Barilla and in current HelloFresh cavatappi recipes using pesto and vegetables. However, this FreshFitChef version is an original, independently developed recipe designed to keep the process simple for ordinary home cooks.

Why You’ll Like This Cavatappi Pesto Pasta

There are plenty of pesto pasta recipes online, but I wanted this one to be practical enough for a normal weeknight. You only need a few main ingredients, and most of the cooking happens in one pot and one food processor. What you get is:

  • Springy cavatappi noodles that grip the sauce
  • Fresh, homemade basil pesto
  • Tender broccoli & Bright lemon flavor
  • A simple 25-minute dinner process
  • Plenty of room for easy additions like chicken or shrimp

What Is Cavatappi Pasta?

Cavatappi is a short, corkscrew-shaped pasta. Its twisted structure makes it a particularly useful shape for thick sauces because the ridges and curves hold onto the sauce rather than letting it slide to the bottom of the bowl.

That makes cavatappi a natural choice for pesto, mac and cheese, creamy meat sauces, and cold pasta salads.

Ingredients for Pesto Cavatappi

For the Pasta & Broccoli

  • 12 ounces dry cavatappi pasta (Water & 1 tbsp kosher salt for boiling)
  • 3 cups small broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt & ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Fresh Basil Pesto

  • 2 packed cups fresh basil leaves
  • ⅓ cup pine nuts & 2 garlic cloves
  • ½ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt & ¼ teaspoon black pepper

To Finish

  • ½ cup reserved pasta water (plus more as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
  • ¼ cup extra Parmesan
  • Optional: Fresh basil leaves & Red pepper flakes

Authoritative Tip: The Pesto Flavor Profile

The traditional pesto flavor profile comes from basil, garlic, nuts, cheese and olive oil. According to official methods from Barilla, true pesto relies on raw processing and emphasizes “keeping pesto from excessive heat to help preserve its color and aroma.” I add a little lemon juice and zest in this FreshFitChef version because it helps cut through the richness of the pesto and pairs perfectly with broccoli.

How to Make Pasta Pesto Cavatappi

1. Make the Pesto

Add the basil, pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan, lemon juice, salt and black pepper to a food processor. Pulse several times until everything is finely chopped. With the processor running, slowly add the olive oil and blend until combined but still has a little texture. Don’t process it into a completely smooth paste.

2. Boil the Pasta Water

Bring a large pot of water to a full boil. Add the salt. Before adding the cavatappi, make sure the water is properly salted.

3. Cook the Cavatappi

Add the cavatappi to the boiling water. Cook according to the package directions until al dente. Do not overcook it; the pasta should still have a slight bite.

Crucial Step: Reserve the Pasta Water

Before draining, scoop out at least 1 cup of pasta water. This starchy water is one of the easiest ways to turn pesto into a glossy sauce that coats the pasta instead of sitting in the bottom of the bowl. Official Barilla and HelloFresh recipes use this exact technique!

4. Cook the Broccoli

About 4 minutes before the pasta should be finished, add the broccoli florets to the same pot. Cook until the broccoli is bright green and just tender.

5. Drain and Combine

Drain the cavatappi and broccoli together (do not rinse). Return them to the warm pot. Add the pesto. Pour in about ¼ cup of reserved pasta water and toss.

6. Adjust Sauce and Finish

Add more pasta water, a tablespoon at a time, until the pesto lightly coats every piece of cavatappi. You want the sauce to look glossy and loose enough to move around the pasta without becoming watery.

7. Add Lemon and Parmesan

Add the lemon zest and remaining lemon juice. Toss again. Add the extra Parmesan and a few cracks of black pepper. Taste and serve immediately!

How to Get the Best Pesto Cavatappi

  • Use fresh basil: It provides the characteristic pesto flavor and aroma.
  • Don’t drown the pesto in oil: Start with the amount listed and adjust only when necessary.
  • Don’t cook pesto aggressively: There’s no reason to fry or boil the pesto. Residual heat is enough.
  • Keep the broccoli slightly firm: If it becomes mushy, it disappears into the pesto.

Can You Use Store-Bought Pesto?

Absolutely. Homemade pesto gives you the freshest basil flavor, but a good refrigerated or jarred pesto is a perfectly practical choice for a quick dinner. Use about ¾ to 1 cup prepared pesto for this recipe. If the pesto is particularly thick, loosen it with reserved pasta water before tossing it with the cavatappi.

Easy Variations & Higher-Protein Options

The base recipe is vegetarian and satisfying on its own, but you can easily turn it into a more substantial meal.

  • Pesto Cavatappi With Chicken: Add 1 to 1½ cups cooked sliced chicken breast and an extra squeeze of lemon.
  • Pesto Cavatappi With Shrimp: Cook peeled shrimp separately and toss it with the finished pasta.
  • Creamy Pesto Cavatappi: Stir 2–3 tablespoons of cream cheese into the warm pasta before adding the pesto.
  • Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto Cavatappi: Replace some of the basil pesto with sun-dried tomato pesto.

Storage & Reheating

Transfer leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate promptly. The pasta is best within a few days while the pesto still tastes fresh. If you’re preparing the dish ahead, consider storing a small amount of pesto separately and adding it after reheating.

To Reheat: Pesto pasta can become dry after refrigeration. Add 1–2 tablespoons of water to the pasta before reheating. Warm it gently in a skillet over low heat or microwave it in short intervals. Avoid boiling the pesto!

Recipe Notes & Nutrition Information

Store-bought Pesto: You can absolutely use jarred pesto! Use about ¾ to 1 cup prepared pesto, depending on how heavily sauced you like your pasta, and use the pasta water to loosen it.
